The Old, the Young and the Sea!

THE OLD, THE YOUNG & THE SEA

From Hossegor to Ericeira: A team of cinematographers, photographers and storytellers go on a 16 week journey along the European surf coast in two old VW buses. Outcome: A documentary about surf and life in Europe.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

„The Old, the Young & the Sea“ embarks on an adventurous search along Europe’s Atlantic Coast framing a vivid snapshot of Europe’s (Surfing-)Culture. The audience will be introduced into a world in which surfing is not just seen as a mere spare time activity. In this world surfing is rather experienced as an ever pervading lifestyle of its protagonists. Surfing concentrates people from all over Europe on a geographically very slim stretch of land/water. As a matter of fact surfing in Europe gives us a schematic picture of the vibrant European cultures. Both, people’s and landscape’s similarities as well as contrasts are the linking element to divine a complex universe.

A SHORT STORY ABOUT A SPANISH SURFING PIONEER

For the first teaser Juan Giriber was picked as a protagonist, whom we met on our first trip for OYS in Spring 2012. His age is not exactly known, but way over 70 Juan is still stoked about surfing as much as in the old days when he and some friends saw the first pictures of a guy riding a wave in the 1960s. Being one of the first surfers in Spain, he not only discovered many surfable beaches which are now well known to the surfing community – he also grew famous in Spain for supposedly being the father of “el invento” (in English: the invention), in the rest of the world simply called “the leash”. Juan Giriber’s story is the first glimpse of the documentary movie “The Old, the Young & the Sea” to be released in late spring 2013.
